Bowel Cancer / Lung Cancer / Screening
On 15th May 2012, Haughton Thornley Patient Participation Group hosted a meeting for patients on the public to raise awareness of the NHS Bowel Screening Programme, symptoms of lung cancer and what people should do if they may be at risk of cancer and how to reduce the risk and also information about the NHS Screening Programme which looks at non-cancerous conditions that people may be at risk of.

You can see photos of the event by clicking here

See Angela Osei from the NHS Greater Manchester Bowel Screening Programme talk about Bowel Cancer screening and what it involves and what patients can do to help prevent cancer or identify it earlier

Brief talk in Bengali explaining the Bowel Screening Programme. Please encourage patients who speak Bengali to listen to this

Dr John Boley (FY2 doctor) presents "How to prevent cancer" and what you can do to help reduce your risk

Watch a video from NHS Choices with Gary Linekar and former patients talking about the importance of being aware of symptoms

Dr John Boley discusses the symptoms that may suggest lung cancer and what you should do if you are concerned about yourself or that of a loved one.

Listen to the Questions and Answers following the talk including why patients who may be at risk of cancer or indeed have cancer should have access to their records. Another staff member reminds the audience of the need for the Summary Care Record so that even if we do not sign up for access to our own GP electronic health records, the clinicians caring for us anywhere in England can access summary information about our health to help them guide treatment. (NHS Tameside & Glossop will be starting an awareness campaign for the public on this next month with a view for records to be uploaded to the Spine later this year. Haughton Thornley Medical Centres recommends patients  support this. Click here for further information to see why we encourage patients to access their GP electronic health records as well as having a Summary Care Record that can be accessed with patient's permission in an emergency  or urgent situation). This is Real-time Digital Medicine.

Listen to James Walker, CIO for the NHS National Screening Programme talk about the work of the Programme and how it is reaching out to people from the cradle to their grave.
